BMG Records seek for "Another Westlife"

Music industry giant seeks new boyband

The record label behind Justin Timberlake, Dido, and Pop Idol is set
to form a Scottish boyband.

BMG Records will hold auditions across the country next week in a bid
to find the next Westlife.

The quest will begin on Monday in the unlikely setting of the
Cabarfeidh Hotel on Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.

The talent scouts will then visit Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee and
Edinburgh.

The six-hour auditions will conclude in Glasgow on Saturday.

In a newspaper advert, BMG said: "We are looking for males aged 16-24
who are great singers, dancers and look good!"

Motown stars to give Westlife a new spin

WESTLIFE are planning to record with some of Motown’s greatest artists for their next album. The Irish band have already enlisted pop diva Diana Ross, who is hoping to top the British music charts in time for her 60th birthday on March 26.

Louis Walsh, the band’s manager, is planning to approach Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and Mariah Carey to appear on the Motown tribute album. Other names being mentioned are Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow, whose song Mandy recently gave Westlife their ninth chart success in five years.

“This is something that the band really want to do,” said Walsh. “We don’t have a finalised list yet but we are looking at some big names and we will be starting the album in March or April.”

Walsh said Diana Ross was the first to commit to working with Westlife. “Diana is looking for a No 1 record because her 60th is in March. She’s on tour in Britain and it is a great opportunity for her to get together with the band and record a hit single. We don’t know if it will be one of her songs yet.”

Steve Mack, the band’s producer, is currently writing new songs for the album and studio time has been booked from March. “It will be a great album,” said Walsh. “Recording with Diana is a great way to start it off.” Ross is coming to the Point in Dublin in March, 16 days before her birthday.

While Westlife’s critics will cringe at the prospect of the band recording saccharine versions of 1960s hits, former Motown stars are likely to be only too pleased to team up with the band to score chart hits. Stevie Wonder recently appeared in the British pop charts performing his hit Signed, Sealed & Delivered with the boy band Blue. Carey has already recorded with Westlife. Against All Odds was slated by critics and recently appeared in a list of the top 20 all-time worst pop songs.

Ross shot to fame with Motown group the Supremes. Their first No 1, Where Did Our Love Go?, paved the way for the band to become the most successful girl group of all time.

The Supremes had 12 No 1 hits from 1961 until they split up eight years later. Ross went on to achieve solo success with hits such as Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

Last year, however, she attracted headlines for the wrong reasons after being arrested in America on drink-driving charges

Bryan misses Sam to see Kerry

Samantha Mumba's 21st Birthday Party in Four Seasons Hotel last night was a celebrity only affair but Westlife's Bryan McFadden missed out the bash so he could watch his wife on I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here...

Samantha Mumba has redefined the 21st Birthday Party; instead of having your mates, a couple of aunties, and your granny making their way to the grotty backroom of a local pub she has made it a glitzy Hollywood affair.

And watching the celebrities arrive at the Four Seasons last night was like watching the red carpet catwalk at the Oscars.

Both Irish and international stars of the stage and screen showed up in their finest threads to honour the young star on her birthday and even though Hello! magazine had bought the rights to the party ShowBiz Ireland managed to snap her guests as they arrived.

But as the lads from Westlife walked in with their better-halves thoughts turned to Bryan McFadden who was made conspicuous by his absence.

According to whispers he was at home watching his wife Kerry on I'm a Celebrity Get me out of Here but would make his way to the bash after the broadcast.

And looking at the Gucci, Chanel, and Dior brands on the guest's carrier bags Samantha received some very expensive presents.

Guests on the night included Rosanna Davison, Shane and Gillian Filan, Nicky and Georgina Byrne, Louis Walsh, Gay Byrne, Gerry Ryan, Mr Pussy, Linda Martin, Keith and Lisa Duffy, Girls Aloud, Brian Ormond and Natara Byrne, Keith Barry, Pat Kenny, Sam's Ex - Mark Henderson, and many many more...

Westlife interview ---Taiwan

Talk about your feeling of coming back to Asia again
(in Hong Kong last October)...
Mark: Good! It's very good! I can feel the support and
passion from the fans, even in airport and hotel, they
are nice. We are always asked the same quesion when
we will be back to Asia. It's not like we don't wanna
come back, but it's really far away, we need to make
time from our hectic schedule for concerts, showcases
and interviews. We will be back here again in the
beginning of this year (2004) during our 6-12 months
tour.

Talk about your new album...
Kian: Turnaound released in November, it's one of our
best albums. And Hey Whatever is the the first song
came from this album. The album consists of different
styles of songs, pop, uptempo and ballad. Hey
Whatever is different from the style we normally did
before. Hope you enjoy our new album.

Different style from the original Mandy...
Nicky: The original song Mandy was released in 1974
but now we did it again in 2004. For what I know, the
ending melody of song we sang was changed slightly and
it's different from the original one. The change's
good, cute and suitable.

Excited and nervous about the new album?
Bryan: We got many success before, and we grow up a
lot now. We've been together for almost 6 years. And
this album decide our future, whether it's the end of
Westlife or we should carry on. We wanna get the
reaction and feedback from fans.

How about your married life?
Shane: We're just normal boys and we need to get
married. It's good! We hope our fans would
understand and respect us. It's our private lives.
You see, although Bryan got married two years ago, it
can't affect Westlife and we still go on.
Nicky: I think our fans grow up and understand us.
They think we're attractive, not because we're good
looking guys, but our music. Some new or younger fans
may wanna marry us, but gradually they will realize
what they love is our music, hope they enjoy it!

Being a husband...
Bryan: It's great! I love it! It's good to have a wife
and kids when I go home. They give me emotion and
energy to work again. When I feel exhausted and tired
after work, my family keep me going.

Will you go to Taiwan again?
Mark: Definitely! We love the fans there and we would
like to have concert there. We will be back soon.
The food is amazing and people there are friendly.
When will we go to Taiwan again? I don't know yet, but
we try to be back soon.

JODI ON SIMON

SIMON COWELL is having his carefully-cultivated Mr Nasty image trashed by Hollyoaks babe Jodi Albert.

Gorgeous Jodi Debbie Dean in the hit soap is dating Westlife hunk Kian Egan.

But before she found fame in the Channel 4 soap Jodi, 20, was in the flop pop band Girl Thing, managed by Cowell.

The brunette said: ''I really liked Simon, he was absolutely lovely to me. He was so protective and he worked very closely with us. He wasn't the big celebrity he is now.

''He was a big name in the industry but hewasn't widely known to the public.''

Kerry's peeved at Bryan

Westlife hunk Bryan McFadden has incurred the wrath of his buxom wife Kerry because he's been out partying too much.

The former Atomic Kitten singer is due to appear on the third series of ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here next week but is rather peeved off with her man because she's been left at home while he parties with mates. Bryan apparently flew 15 pals to Liverpool's The Place nightclub recently, while Kerry packed her bags for the Australian trip.

"Kerry isn't impressed. She's going to Australia and she won't see Bryan for at least two weeks," a source told the Daily Sport. "This was their last weekend together and Bryan has just spent all of his time with his mates. She thought he'd want to spend as much time as he could with her, but then she found out he was flying 15 of his mates over from Ireland."

You can't blame poor old Kerry for being a bit annoyed, she'll have to spend the next two weeks in the Australian outback with the likes of John Lydon, Jordan and Mike Read.

I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here begins January 26 on ITV.

Boob war: I'm dropping out - Kerry McFadden

KERRY McFadden threw in the towel in the battle of the boobs yesterday — and admitted she was outgunned by Jordan’s massive bazookas.
Speaking as she arrived at Coolangatta Airport on Australia’s Gold Coast, Kerry, 23, laughed: “My t**s are as big as her nipples!

“She’s a really nice girl, but I don’t think there’s any competition when it comes to t**s.”

Ex-Atomic Kitten star Kerry, a 36DD, said she was looking forward to being stranded with hell-raising model Jordan, who weighs in at a whopping 32FF.

Kerry McFadden ... admits she will
lose the boob war despite being a 36DD

But she admitted she was so worried about the show she had to be rushed to hospital when she visited her mum before jetting to Oz.

Mum-of-two Kerry, who is married to Westlife’s Bryan, said: “We were supposed to go out to the pub, but I threw up as soon as I got to my mum’s. They ended up rushing me to hospital with severe stomach pains and I was there for a day and half.”

Kerry added: “I made myself ill because I was so worried about leaving Bryan and my girls. I’m also worried people will see me on TV and hate me.”

Westlife--Artist of the month!!

These five Irish lads don't know it yet, but many newborn girls will probably be named "Mandy" after the Westlife single of the same name.

Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan, Bryan McFadden, Kian Egan, and Mark Feehily are the boys who form Westlife. Once managed by former boy band alumni Ronan Keating, they have since surpassed the level of success set by their predecessor Boyzone.

Westlife's honors include eight U.K. No. 1 singles, seven of which have hit the top spot consecutively, winning the MTV Best UK And Ireland Act Award in 2000, and winning Best Pop Act at the Brit Awards in 2001.

The band's eponymous debut dished out ballads like "Swear It Again," which rose to No. 1 in the U.K. Their smooth vocals, coupled with their pleasing looks, made them instant idols overnight. In their debut tour in 2001, the boys played to a sellout audience for 11 nights at Dublins The Point. Proving that they could sing just as well in "live" performances, Westlife went on to give 80 shows across three continents, making critics and detractors sit up and listen.

It wasn't long before Westlife gained the respect of their peers in the industry, such as Mariah Carey, who collaborated with them on the cover of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds." The boys also progressed to develop their songwriting abilities, writing five songs on the album World Of Our Own. When American Idol winner Ruben Studdard sang "Flying Without Wings" to victory, Westlife's status as pop icons was cemented.

Westlife's new single "Mandy" has since won Record Of The Year in the U.K., making it Westlife's third win after "Flying Without Wings" and "My Love." As a testament to their immense popularity, the band has also come up tops as recipients of the IMA People's Choice award for the third time. Their latest album Turnaround moved 150,000 copies in its first week of release in the U.K., knocking off Michael Jackson's Hits album from the top.

Perhaps, it is Westlife's dedication to their music that has led them to outlive other boy bands. As Kian says, "The passion and love we have for Westlife is still 100%... Westlife are going to keep going as long as the fans and the band are still enjoying it; at the moment we're loving it."

With the overwhelming support of fans from around the world, it looks like Westlife will have many more No. 1s on their hands!

pledge of love to each other -but agreed not to get married.
The couple have decided to establish their own careers before tying
the know and Hollyoaks star Jodi, 20, has vowed she does not want to
become just a popstar's wife.
She has told her family she is too young to have children and wants
to make her way as an actress before settling down.
Kian has seen three pals from Westlife walk down the aisle, most
recently Shane Filan, who married Gillian Walsh, Nicky Byrne who
married the Taoiseach's daugher Georgina Ahern and Bryan McFadden who
got hitched to former Atomic Jitten Kerry Katona 2 years ago.
Jodi - who plays Debbie Dean in the Channel 4 soap, had a heart-to-
heart with her father on Christmas Day, admitting she did not want to
become Mrs Kian Egan - yet.
George Albert, who lives in North London with Jodi's mother Eileen,
said: "Jodi and Kian are smitten with each other but they are both
very sensible. Often marriages between normal girls and popstars do
not work because of the fame thing, but Jodi and Kian are both
talented in their own right and they will both continue to flourish
in their own careers".
Kian, 23, fell for Jodi fiver years ago when she was a member of the
female band, Girl Thing but the pair started dating only last May,
putting an end to the Irish singer's womanising. In the past he was
linked with glamour model Jodie Marsh and Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon.
He spent Christmas with his family in Ireland before heading out to
London to spen St. Stephen's Day with Jodi and her family.
The couple flew back to Ireland the next day but almost missed
Shane's wedding. "Jodi and Kian were quite hungover when they ahd to
get to Stansted," said Mr. Albert. "They missed their flight and had
to hire a car to fly to Heathrow, where they arrived just in time to
jump on a plane. They had a great time at the wedding but it
certainly has not changed their minds about getting engaged," he
added..."

Making tracks

Westlife are marking a new phase in their record-breaking career with the release of their greatest hits so far. Diane Coetzer chats to band member Nicky Byrne

You know you're dealing with a superstar of the sweetest kind when you ask him during a telephone interview if it's possible to send a personal greeting to your 11-year-old daughter, a major fan, and the answer is a resounding yes, followed by a delightfully long (now recorded for posterity) message.

And so it was with Westlife's Nicky Byrne, when we got him on the line from Dublin for this interview. After chatting to him for our allotted time, it was impossible not to come away feeling there are still decent and plain nice people in the ranks of the globe's top music stars.

It's not overstating the case to describe the Irish quintet - others in the band are Bryan McFadden, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, and Kian Egan - as the world's most successful boy band. After all, since they were formed, Westlife have shifted 18 million albums and seven million singles worldwide - not to mention the awards and the record-breaking, chart-topping hits they have enjoyed. Indeed, Westlife hold the Guinness Book of Records record for the most number-one singles in the UK in a row - in this case, seven consecutive chart-toppers that turned the boys into superstars.

It's in no way cheeky, then, for Westlife to release a greatest hits album, Unbreakable: The Greatest Hits Volume 1. Aside from their Guinness Book of Records feat, the group have a heap of other number ones, all of which are gathered together on the album, including Swear It Again, If I Let You Go and Flying Without Wings. They have also included six new tracks, among them the latest single Unbreakable and an outstanding version of Cliff Richard's ballad Miss You Nights.

Ask Byrne if it feels strange that, at their ages (he is 23), Westlife can issue a career retrospective, and he's frank about just what the band's ride through music has been. "We're still very young - I'm the oldest of the bunch! To be honest with you, it's a celebration of the first phase of Westlife. We've just signed a deal with our record company for another five albums, and our main aim is to get to Greatest Hits Part 11. Not many boy bands or vocal groups can do that, and we're looking forward to it - we're really going to go for it. We look back at all the things that have gone on over the past three years and we laugh and cry and look forward to another three and even more."

Until the deal (reportedly worth £20-million, or about R300-million) was signed, the UK tabloid press had a field day, stirring the rumour-mill with talk that the greatest-hits compilation signalled Westlife's demise. Question Byrne on this and he sighs that resigned sigh of someone who has been through the tabloid mill and back again.

"We've tried to say from day one that we're not breaking up after The Greatest Hits, but the press want to break you up . . . We're the biggest selling pop band in the world right now. We're enjoying ourselves, we're reaping the rewards, we're touring the world, we can do wonders for charities, we're meeting special people, we're earning great money - we're living a dream, so why would we want to give that up?"

The group began with Filan, Egan and Feehily in Sligo, Ireland, in 1998. Fortuitous encounters with Louis Welsh (Boyzone's manager) and singer Ronan Keating (who co-managed Westlife for a time) saw the boys stepping up the game and later roping in Byrne and McFadden to form the most famous Irish group since U2.

Byrne puts Westlife's ability to keep going as such a creative musical force down to being able to appeal to a variety of fans. "We have been able to cross over to all age groups - to housewives, to young guys and women of 21 or 22 who're getting engaged, to older people. Our gigs are filled with young fans, for sure, but also many older music lovers who will remain loyal to us."

Westlife have a hefty fan base in South Africa, something Byrne says the band were surprised to find out when they toured in 2001. "We didn't realise how big Westlife had become in South Africa. We visited Joburg, Sun City and Cape Town, and it was incredible to see the huge following - fans in the hotels, fans at the show. And of course we shot our video there - When You're Looking Like That - which is amazing."

Word direct from Byrne is that Westlife will definitely be in South Africa in 2003, stopping off on their Greatest Hits tour.

"We thought it was a beautiful place. We were chauffered around, the crowds at the concerts were outstandingly good-looking, we stayed in great places and went on safari. It was one of the best times of our lives. That's why we want to go back so badly."

Aside from the tour, next year will see Westlife working on another album. "The six new songs on The Greatest Hits are a taster of what is to come on the fourth album. We're celebrating three years with the compilation, but we want to put the older songs to bed and move to the next phase. The fourth album will move into more grown-up ballads, like Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, and we want people to see how far we've moved and what we've become."

For Byrne and the rest of the band, precious time off is rare and spent with family and friends.

"A free day means jumping on a plane to Ireland and spending time at my house with my girlfriend. I'm getting a dog soon! I put a baseball cap on and go for a walk or to my parents or shopping. It's about chilling out. I need that baseball cap - if I didn't (have it on) and I was walking around the street shopping I'd get the head pulled off me."

He and the other members of Westlife are getting used to the tabloid attention. "You have to take the rough with the smooth. You try and gain relationships with journalists you trust to counter stories that are untrue. Often you have to ignore much of what is written."

At present, Byrne is listening to the likes of Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton. And, pretty soon, millions of Westlife fans around the world are going to be pushing that replay button on The Greatest Hits again, and again and again. "It's a fantastic thought," Byrne says. "But, to be honest, we don't think about all that stuff too much. Sometimes we watch old footage and laugh and cry and thank Jesus. What we've done is amazing, but you can't live on memories. You have to keep going, and that is what Westlife is going to do."

Shane Filan

The festive season was extra special for Shane Filan this year. Not only were Westlife
celebrating another huge alb, but he got married too. Sweetie Shane wed his Childhood love,
Gillian Walsh, in a traditional Irish ceremony at Bullintubber Abbey in Co Mayo on December
28. The lads will be back in February with a new single - tipped to be Obvious - 'til then,
Shane faces our Q's...
What do you find rally boring?
"I find a lot of music at the moment boring. There's a lot of rubbish artists out there at
the moment which shouldn't be. About 40% of what's on the radio at the moment, shouldn't
be."
Best compliment you've received?
"I suppose if someone says you're looking well or you sang brilliant. If someone you know or
someone you look up to says you're a good singer."
What do you always carry in your pockets?
"A credit card, a bank card and a phone. I always lose the key for my security gate. You
can't open it with your hands either. You're meant to have a buzzer outside the front door
but i don't. I'll have to sort that out in my new house."
What do you need to kickstart your day?
"Something nice to eat. Whether it's a bacon sandwich or whatever, it just has to be hot. If
i have cereal, i have it with hot milk. Roasting hot milk and your tummy is all warm - i'm
loving it."
What do you crave most in the world?
"I love chips. Any chips will do. And me mam's cooking - bacon, cabbage and mashed potatoes
with parsley sauce all over and a bit of brown sauce with a pint of Guinness. I love it.
Love brown sauce."

Obvious coming next
----------------------------------------------------------

On February 23rd 2004 Westlife will release their next single 'Obvious',
the third song to be taken from Turnaround. Definitely one of the
album's standout tracks, Obvious has an instantly memorable chorus, the
band's vocal performance is superb and reminds the listener just how
Westlife have got this far. It's is a simple love song beautifully
executed by Westlife doing what they do best.

'Turnaround', Westlife's fifth album went straight into the number one
spot in its first week of release and has shipped a million copies in
the UK alone. Packed with epic style anthems, chunky guitars,
sing-a-long choruses, beautiful melodies and the trademark leg trembling
Westlife vocals, the album also features the massive hit singles 'Hey
Whatever' and 'Mandy'.

Westlife's success to date is incredible. They are the only recording
artists in the history of the awards to win the prestigious Record of
the Year three times. They have performed to over a million fans on
three sell-out arena tours to become the biggest selling arena tour act
ever. They have sold over 32 million records globally; had five
multi-platinum albums in the UK alone; scored a record breaking 12 UK
number ones, picked up two BRIT Awards and an MTV Europe Award.

Standing stronger than ever Bryan, Kian, Mark, Nicky and Shane will
commence their biggest world tour yet with their massive arena shows
confirmed as far as Cape Town, Beirut, Tokyo and back home across
Europe. All before they head back into the recording studio in the
summer when they'll start creating their sixth album. It looks Obvious
from here, 2004 is going to be yet another hectic year for this
record-breaking act!

Westlife Singer Worried About Good Looking Rivals

Bryan McFadden is warning his wife Kerry Katona not to flirt
with "good-looking men" like Dean Gaffney in the I'm a Celebrity show.

The Westlife singer says he fears she may try to get her own back on
him by chatting up the former EastEnders actor.

The Daily Star quotes McFadden as saying: "I'm dreading Kerry going
to Australia. She's a naturally flirtatious person and I'm worried
that she won't be able to stop herself while surrounded by good-
looking men.

"Last year, Phil Tufnell had a girlfriend back home but that didn't
stop him and Linda Barker - who was married - striking up a real
chemistry out there," he said.

Shane & Gillian's wedding song

Amazed by Lonestar

Every time our eyes meet
This feeling inside me
Is almost more than I can take
Baby when you touch me
I can feel how much you love me
And it just blows me away
I've never been this close to anyone or anything
I can hear your thoughts
I can see your dreams

I don't know how you do what you do
I'm so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I wanna spend the rest of my life
With you by my side Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby I'm amazed by you

The smell of your skin
The taste of your kiss
The way you whisper in the dark
Your hair all around me
Baby you surround me
You touch every place in my heart
Oh it feels like the first time every time
I wanna spend the whole night in your eyes

I don't know how you do what you do
I'm so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I wanna spend the rest of my life
With you by my side
Forever and ever

Every little thing that you do
Baby I'm amazed by you
Every little thing that you do
I'm so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I wanna spend the rest of my life
With you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Oh, every little thing that you do
Baby I'm amazed by you

WELL DONE FROM WESTLIFE

Children of courage - We give a brave brother and sister the chance to meet their favourite band, westlife. . . .

Last Easter, siblings Lisa and Liam Southall saved their 13 year old friend from drowning the girl, a non-swimmer, had gone to wash her hand in a nearby quarry after falling over near their home in Dudley, West Midlands, and lipped into the quarry's ice water.

Lisa, 13 calmly removed her shoes, jeans and top before diving in to pull her friend to safety, while Liam, 11, ran half a mile to raise the alarm.

"I wasn't scared but the water was so cold that, at first, it tool my breath away, and it was hard to swim", says Lisa. "when i got her back to the side, she started to throw up the dirty water she'd swallowed. That's when i realised she could have died".

Thanks to Liam, paramedics raced to the scene, and the two girls were soon on their way to hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia.

To celebrate Lisa and Liam's bravery, Woman's Own arranged for them to interview their idols Westlife. Here's how they got on.

Shane, are you having a stag party before your wedding in December?

I've decided not to have a wild one. It's going to be very low-key because i don't want to go around a big city making loads of noise! we'll probably just play some golf and have a few pints.

You and your fiancee, Gillian Walsh, have been together for many years. Why did you keep it a secret for so long?

I've been going out with Gillian since the band started. It was my choice that we kept it private as i wanted her to be able to lead a normal college life and get a degree. she did that, and when her course ended, we admitted we were going out. she's kept me grounded - i don't know what I'd done without her.

Bryan, how do you like being a dad?

It's fantastic. Molly's two now and Lily Sue is nine months. Their mum, Kerry, is cool as well, but tried from the kids! Sometimes it's good to go on tour so i can get some sleep! But i make sure i see them all the time when I'm not working. I can't get enough of them.

Nicky, you and your wife, Georgina, were married in the summer. Do you want to start a family soon?

Georgina and i aren't planning on having children yet, but if it happens that will be great. I'm not sure if I'm mature enough to be a dad, but who knows?

Mark and Kian, are you ready to settle down yet?

Mark: I'm certainly not ready to get married - the thought of being on someone's company for the rest of my life and having kids doesn't appeal to me yet. Maybe I'll think about it in my thirties.

Kian: According to the tabloids, I'm dating ever girl under the sun! In fact, I've been in a relationship for four months with Jodi Albert, who plays Debbie in Hollyoaks. She was signed to our record label then she was in a band called Girl Thing a few years ago. That's how i first got to know her. I'm crazy about her, and we get on very well.

Motown stars to give Westlife a new spin

WESTLIFE are planning to record with some of Motown's greatest
artists for their next album. The Irish band have already enlisted
pop diva Diana Ross, who is hoping to top the British music charts in
time for her 60th birthday on March 26.

Louis Walsh, the band's manager, is planning to approach Stevie
Wonder, Gladys Knight and Mariah Carey to appear on the Motown
tribute album. Other names being mentioned are Rod Stewart and Barry
Manilow, whose song Mandy recently gave Westlife their ninth chart
success in five years.
"This is something that the band really want to do," said Walsh. "We
don't have a finalised list yet but we are looking at some big names
and we will be starting the album in March or April."

Walsh said Diana Ross was the first to commit to working with
Westlife. "Diana is looking for a No 1 record because her 60th is in
March. She's on tour in Britain and it is a great opportunity for her
to get together with the band and record a hit single. We don't know
if it will be one of her songs yet."

Steve Mack, the band's producer, is currently writing new songs for
the album and studio time has been booked from March. "It will be a
great album," said Walsh. "Recording with Diana is a great way to
start it off." Ross is coming to the Point in Dublin in March, 16
days before her birthday.

While Westlife's critics will cringe at the prospect of the band
recording saccharine versions of 1960s hits, former Motown stars are
likely to be only too pleased to team up with the band to score chart
hits. Stevie Wonder recently appeared in the British pop charts
performing his hit Signed, Sealed & Delivered with the boy band Blue.
Carey has already recorded with Westlife. Against All Odds was slated
by critics and recently appeared in a list of the top 20 all-time
worst pop songs.

Ross shot to fame with Motown group the Supremes. Their first No 1,
Where Did Our Love Go?, paved the way for the band to become the most
successful girl group of all time.

The Supremes had 12 No 1 hits from 1961 until they split up eight
years later. Ross went on to achieve solo success with hits such as
Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

Last year, however, she attracted headlines for the wrong reasons
after being arrested in America on drink-driving charges.

THAT LOVIN' FILAN
Dec 29 2003

Westlife Shane ties knot with long-time love Gill

By Paul Martin

WESTLIFE'S Shane Filan said he was ''the luckiest guy in the world'' as he wed his childhood sweetheart yesterday.

Guests, including Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, watched as Shane and Gillian Walsh exchanged vows at Ballintubber Abbey, County Mayo.

Dressed in white, Shane joked with bandmates Kian Egan and Mark Fehilly as his bride turned up late.

When Gillian, wearing an embroideredwhite dress arrived at the altar, he whispered to her: ''You look amazing.''

Afterwards, Shane said: ''Looking at Gillian at the altar was the best moment of my life. I was welling up during the service.

''I feel like the luckiest guy in the world and everything went according to plan.

''It was great to go out there and wave to the fans and also see all our friends and family enjoying our big day.

''Gillian felt like a princess and looked like one too.''

Last night, guests enjoyed a wedding banquet at nearby Ashford Castle.

Belfast Telegraph--Westlife star Shane ties the knot

29 December 2003

WESTLIFE'S Shane Filan was today preparing to jet off on honeymoon to Hawaii after marrying long- term girlfriend Gillian Walsh in a romantic winter wedding.

Sligo-born Shane became the third member of the chart-topping Irish band to tie the knot when he exchanged vows with his childhood sweetheart yesterday.

The pair wed at historic Ballintubber Abbey, but celebrated later in the luxurious lakeside splendour of the nearby Ashford Castle hotel.

Shane popped the question while he and Gillian were on holiday together in Dubai last year.

The Westlifer's elder brother Finbar acted as best man at the ceremony in Ballintubber Abbey, which dates back to the 13th century.

Westlife's Kian Egan and Mark Feehily, who are also from Sligo, acted as groomsmen. More than 350 guests turned out to see the happy couple wed, including Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and wife Miriam, Louis Walsh, and Ronan Keating and wife Yvonne.

The bride shone in a strapless embroidered white dress, while Shane wore a stylish cream suit.

The groom endured a nervous half hour wait before Gillian arrived in a white horse-drawn carriage.

Her five bridesmaids were driven to the country church in silver BMWs.

After the ceremony, Shane and Gillian posed for photographs in the doorway of the church.

The event marked the first Westlife wedding since last summer's occasion in a French, rather than an Irish village, when Nicky Byrne married Georgina, one of Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern's two daughters.

Up to 200 noisy Westlife fans stood in the icy-cold but mainly bright weather outside the Abbey to catch a glimpse of their favourites and cheer them into and out of the church.

Following the nuptial mass the happy couple and their guests journeyed to Ashford Castle, where they partied until 6am this morning.

Artist of the month and Showtime

These five Irish lads don't know it yet, but many
newborn girls will probably be named "Mandy" after the
Westlife single of the same name.

Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan, Bryan McFadden, Kian Egan,
and Mark Feehily are the boys who form Westlife. Once
managed by former boy band alumni Ronan Keating, they
have since surpassed the level of success set by their
predecessor Boyzone.

Westlife's honors include eight U.K. No. 1 singles,
seven of which have hit the top spot consecutively,
winning the MTV Best UK And Ireland Act Award in 2000,
and winning Best Pop Act at the Brit Awards in 2001.

The band's eponymous debut dished out ballads like
"Swear It Again," which rose to No. 1 in the U.K.
Their smooth vocals, coupled with their pleasing
looks, made them instant idols overnight. In their
debut tour in 2001, the boys played to a sellout
audience for 11 nights at Dublins The Point. Proving
that they could sing just as well in "live"
performances, Westlife went on to give 80 shows across
three continents, making critics and detractors sit up
and listen.

It wasn't long before Westlife gained the respect of
their peers in the industry, such as Mariah Carey, who
collaborated with them on the cover of Phil Collins'
"Against All Odds." The boys also progressed to
develop their songwriting abilities, writing five
songs on the album World Of Our Own. When American
Idol winner Ruben Studdard sang "Flying Without Wings"
to victory, Westlife's status as pop icons was
cemented.

Westlife's new single "Mandy" has since won Record Of
The Year in the U.K., making it Westlife's third win
after "Flying Without Wings" and "My Love." As a
testament to their immense popularity, the band has
also come up tops as recipients of the IMA People's
Choice award for the third time. Their latest album
Turnaround moved 150,000 copies in its first week of
release in the U.K., knocking off Michael Jackson's
Hits album from the top.

Perhaps, it is Westlife's dedication to their music
that has led them to outlive other boy bands. As Kian
says, "The passion and love we have for Westlife is
still 100%... Westlife are going to keep going as long
as the fans and the band are still enjoying it; at the
moment we're loving it."

With the overwhelming support of fans from around the
world, it looks like Westlife will have many more No.
1s on their hands!
